Changing the rental market

On November 20th, 2014 a pivotal press conference took place at Mazeh 9. Minister of Finance, Yair Lapid, Minister of Justice Tzipi Livni, as well as the Mayor of Tel Aviv – Yafo, Ron Huldai, the Mayor of Ramat Gan, Israel Sinfer, the Mayor of Hadera, Tzvika Gandelman and the chairman of the Students Union in Israel, Gilad Arditi attended.

The rental law's principles provide for:

  1. Stability and certainty to the tenant: Restriction on rent increase according to the Consumer Price Index and for a period of three years.

  2. Proper residential apartment: Determination of basic maintenance standards for rental apartments.

  3. Regulation between the tenant and the landlord: Setting of clear rules on issues such as guarantees, repair of apartment's defects, required warnings from both sides and payments related to the rent.

After a year and a half of hard work promoting the fair rental law, we are pleased to announce that the government's ministries have taken up the challenge and are working on addressing and correcting the existing legal situation. The change in legislation will be the first major step since the early '70s for legal regularization of the private rental market in Israel. Such a change could help balance the relations between the lessees/tenants and the lessors/landlords.

We call on the Israeli parliament to support the law and promulgate it as soon as possible.
