Internship

Programs for young adults that offer expertise in public service have run for many years worldwide. This trend began to gain momentum in Israel only in recent years. The Municipality of Tel Aviv – Yafo was among the pioneers who led at the municipal level by offering specialized program focusing on urban innovation. The program has operated for three years, by the Young Municipal Unit, in collaboration with the Municipality Human Resources Department and sponsored by the City Manager, the Institute for Local Government and the Development Center of Tel Aviv University.

The Program's Purpose

The program helps the development and the promotion of innovative projects that take place in the various municipal departments, with highly talented young adults who are chosen specifically for this project. During the project you will acquire relevant working experience in your area of expertise, as well as broad knowledge of the public sector through workshops and lectures given by senior professors. The internship is accompanied by a short training, study sessions and discussions with municipal officials.

Participation to the program is open to young residents of Tel Aviv – Yafo: graduates or during their last year of studies, or during their studies for M.A. in any field and at all academic institutions.

What kinds of projects are taking place?

The interns will be involved in projects that address public work innovation – the development of a new service, innovative occupation, new technology and/or implementation of new work processes. This year's projects have not yet been selected, but the municipal units apply and undergo a screening process before having an intern. In the last years, ten interns have been integrated in ten different units, such as the Director of Engineering, the Young Adults Department, the Director of Education, the Municipality's spokesman's office, the Global City Manager, the Emergency Department, the Center for Socio-Economic Research along with others.

How long is the internship and how are the hours divided?

The internship begins in March 2016 and will last about three and a half months. Interns will work 120 hours in total, in addition to completing 40 hours of training. Along with the internship and the experience, the intern will also receive a symbolic scholarship of 3,000 NIS.
